My Journey to Understanding English After working for over 14 years in hospitality in Greece, tourists often complimented my English, with many wondering if I had lived in England. But when I finally moved to England, I quickly realized that my language skills needed adjustment. The first 1-2 months were a challenge—I found myself nodding and smiling when people spoke to me, as I barely understood what they said because of their accents. Having moved to an area with a thick accent and a lot of local slang, I had to learn English all over again to communicate effectively. This firsthand experience of adjusting to different English accents has shown me just how important it is to understand and adapt to various regional dialects. Having lived in Yorkshire for over 10 years and interacted with people from all across England, I now have a deep understanding of the challenges that different accents and slang can pose. My goal is to help others learn practical English that they can confidently use, no matter the accent they encounter.

1. Communicative Approach At the core of my teaching methodology is the Communicative Approach, which focuses on language use in real-life situations. Instead of just memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary, students learn how to use English actively through conversation, role-playing, and problem-solving activities. This helps learners gain confidence in their speaking and listening skills, while also emphasizing the importance of cultural context and regional accents. 2. Contextual Learning I integrate real-world scenarios into every lesson to ensure students can connect language to their everyday experiences. Whether it's shopping, ordering food, traveling, or socializing, the vocabulary and phrases learned are immediately applicable. This approach encourages practical usage and fluency over theoretical knowledge. 3. Personalization and Learner-Centered Focus Each lesson is tailored to the student's specific needs and learning style. I use personalized content to keep students engaged, whether that's focusing on topics they're interested in, or helping them practice specific vocabulary related to their life (e.g., school, work, or hobbies). 4. Regional Accents and Pronunciation A unique feature of my methodology is the inclusion of regional English accents. Students are introduced to the different accents from across England (e.g., Cockney, Scouse, Yorkshire, etc.), helping them become more understanding and adaptable to different English speakers. This approach builds a deep cultural appreciation and ensures clarity in both speaking and understanding. 5. Active Listening and Speaking Practice I place great emphasis on developing listening and speaking skills. Through listening exercises, students will be exposed to various speeds, tones, and accents of spoken English, which prepares them for real-world conversations. They'll then be given ample opportunity to speak, correct errors in real-time, and build confidence in expressing themselves in English. 6. Immersive Learning Environment While online, the learning environment will be immersive and interactive. I use flashcards, quizzes, and real-time collaborative documents to foster engagement. The goal is to create an environment that simulates real-world communication and encourages constant practice outside of formal lessons. 7. Regular Progress Monitoring and Feedback I ensure that students are making steady progress by continuously assessing their performance in both spoken and written English. After each lesson, students receive feedback that highlights areas for improvement, with actionable tips on pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. I also encourage self-assessment through reflective exercises where students can track their own learning journey. My teaching method is centered around making English relevant and useful for learners, providing them with the skills they need to communicate naturally and confidently in a variety of situations. By combining real-life scenarios, accent training, and interactive methods, I aim to create a dynamic learning experience that ensures students not only understand English but can use it confidently in the real world. My classes are designed for learners of all ages and levels, ensuring that everyone—from children to adults, beginners to advanced students—can benefit from a personalized and engaging learning experience.
